Ό κατάδικος αύτός είχε πολλή δυνατή συναίσθηση της άμαρτωλότητάς του. Κάθε φορά πού έπισκεπτόμουν τή φυλακή γιά τίποτα αλλο δέν μοϋ ελεγε παρά μόνο γιά τίς άμαρτίες του. Φοβόταν διότι οί άμαρτίες του ύπερβαίνουν τό ελεος τοϋ Θεοϋ. Τά μαλλιά του ήταν ασπρα, άλλά ό χαρακτήρας του ήταν σάν τοϋ νηπίου. Νομίζω ή ζωή στά κάτεργα τόν εκανε νά είναι σάν τό παιδί. Μοϋ διηγήθηκε τά έξης: «Ξέρετε, παππούλη, μέ τιμώρησε ό Θεός γιά τήν αίσχρή καί άκόλαστη ζωή μου. Είμαι άνθρωποκτόνος καί τί άνθρωποκτόνος! Μαζί μέ εναν γιατρό γιά 27 όλόκληρα χρόνια άσχολιόμουν άποκλειστικά καί μόνο μέ τίς έκτρώσεις. Στήν άρχή είχα φόβο Θεοϋ. Φοβόμουν καί τίς άντιρρήσεις της συνειδήσεώς μου. Πολλές Φορές μίλησα για αύτό τό θέμα μέ τή γυναίκα μου, λέγοντάς της οτι θά ηταν πιό καλό νά άφήσω αύτή τή δουλειά. Ή γυναίκα μου δέν ηθελε καν νά άκούσει κάτι τέτοιο.

Lin and Richard, like so many people, dreamed of a life in the sun, away from the pace and problems of their stressed lives as teachers.

Summer holidays in Europe were always over too quickly, and they began to feel the attraction of life in Greece.

After an 'accidental' holiday on the small Greek island of Nisyros albeit having been badly organised by a tour company which promptly went out of business, the spell was well and truly cast.

After several more visits to the island during the holidays, ill-health caused a change in their circumstances in England. Whilst enjoying the freedom to walk, read and generally slowdown, they felt that now was the opportunity to seek their dream.

Packing an elderly Landrover, Richard and Garry, the son of a friend, drove to Nisyros, whilst Lin and their daughter Sue, took the more obvious route and flew.

Speaking only limited Greek on an island where so few of the inhabitants spoke little or no English, created both frustration and hilarity!

Sue and her friend Amy stayed for a part of the summer, their presence causing a significant stir amongst the people of the small mountain village of Nikia where Lin, Richard and Garry had made their home.

From killing the pig to burying the donkey; from cleaning rooms to repairing doors; from washing in well-water inhabited by several species of aquatic life, to dancing at the festivals, their life was filled with a variety and richness of experiences which have to be read to be believed.

This year was the beginning of the realisation of their dream.

The ladder descends along the face of the cliff to a hermitage set on a rock high above the sea--a stone hut accessible to only the most daring spiritual athletes. Here in the desert of Mount Athos, a peninsula in northern Greece, Christian monks have climbed down these rickety steps for more than a millennium to devote their lives to prayer. They renounce everything, withdrawing from the world to praise God. For food they depend upon the generosity of passing fishermen to whom they lower baskets on pulleys, which is why this area of the monastic republic of Athos is called Karoúlia, the Place of Pulleys. And this image of asceticism guided my pilgrimages to the Holy Mountain, the first of which I made in March 1998.


I had reached a crossroads in my life--in my marriage, my work, and my health--which I attempted to navigate through the discipline of an ancient faith. Things of the Hidden God, the record of my journeys into the world of Orthodox monasticism, is thus an account of a place little known in the West and a spiritual reckoning. I walked the length and width of the peninsula, visiting all twenty monasteries and dozens of settlements, little expecting that my encounters with a tradition at once foreign and familiar would shake me to the core. But the liturgy and icons; the monks and pilgrims; the landscape and legends--these impressed upon me the need to forge a closer relationship to God.
